Celebrating World Tourism Day in Rhodes with the longest ever Melekouni for the Guiness Record.

The preparation of a 30 meter traditional Rhodian sweet delicacy “Melekouni”, (a sweet which is customarily given to guests at Weddings and Christenings consisting of; sesame seeds and honey specially made for these occasions. The Melekouni is usually shaped into a triangle and wrapped in cellophane with a ribbon tied around it). 

The venue took place behind the Prefecture of Dodecanese Islands in the centre of the town of Rhodes on 26 September 2010, in an attempt to break a record. The event curiously attracted 3.000 locals and tourists, the outcome of which proved a great success!

The creation of the Melekouni was witnessed and measured by three officials in compliance with the Guiness Book of Records regulations. The documentation was enthusiastically forwarded to London to be processed in time for the new edition of the book.

In celebration of this remarkable event, a local Adult Dance Group of the Cultural and Folkloric Association demonstrated some of the manners, customs and dances of a traditional Rhodian wedding.

The “Melekouni” was quickly consumed by the spectators which disappointedly was not sufficient for the 3.000 visitors in attendance!
